🏛️ Foundations & Grantmaking Entities
Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)
Overview
An account held at a sponsoring public charity to which you contribute and immediately take a deduction, then recommend grants to charities over time. The sponsor holds legal control of the assets, which grow tax-free until granted. It delivers much of a foundation's flexibility with almost none of the administrative overhead.
Best For
- Donors who want an immediate deduction and unhurried granting
- Givers seeking simplicity, low cost, and optional anonymity
- Those "bunching" several years of giving into one deductible year
📊 Key Tax & Giving Advantage
Immediate deduction at public-charity limits (up to 60% of AGI for cash), tax-free growth, and no separate tax return or 5% payout rule.
Considerations
- Grants are advisory — the sponsor holds final legal control
- Sponsor fees and grantable-charity restrictions apply
- Less branding and direct control than a private foundation
